(Montreal)

(Ottawa Station).

(After concluding the 2008 Canada Day trip in the capital, I continued by VIA Rail to Canada's second largest city... Montreal, which is also Canada's largest French-speaking city. Pictured is Ottawa Station located in the southeast of Ottawa. For the 2008 Ottawa trip, please see Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Final Chapter, and Special Chapter.)

(5:45 PM, the train departed right on time.)
CAC5003

(Continuing down the roads of Eastern Canada, the VIA train journey from Ottawa to Montreal takes about 2 hours.)
CAC5004

(Dorval is a mandatory stop en route to Montreal. Reaching here means we're almost in Montreal.)

(Canada's second largest city - Montreal, with a population of 1.6 million. The largest French-speaking city in the Americas, Montreal is also known as the Paris of North America, though English and French are spoken throughout the city.)

Montreal Station (蒙特婁車站)

(Montreal Station. Besides connecting to major cities in Eastern Canada, it also operates routes to New York.)

(European-style architectural exterior.)

(A train pulling into the metro station. Montreal's metro trains are similar to those on Paris Metro Line 4. Combined with the beautifully painted station interior, its aesthetic charm easily rivals that of the Paris Metro.)

(A short video captured by KK showing a Montréal Metro train leaving the station.)

Jazz Festival

(Getting ready to rest at night. But uh... I clearly booked a single room, yet they gave me two beds. How is one person supposed to sleep in two beds? Plus there were eight pillows! I tried sleeping with eight at first, but it was really uncomfortable, so I ended up using just four. Also watched some Quebec TV and found out there's a Jazz Festival going on right now, as well as Quebec's 400th anniversary celebrations—perfect timing!)

St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal

(In the morning, headed to Montreal's famous Catholic church: St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal (French: Saint-Joseph du Mont-Royal). Situated on Mount Royal, it is the largest Catholic church in North America and the third largest in the world. It began as a small chapel built in 1904 by Brother André Bessette on Mount Royal. Construction of the current basilica officially began in 1924 and was completed in 1967. Located about a 15-minute walk from "Côte-des-Neiges" Station on the Montreal Metro Blue Line.)

(Exquisite stained glass in the chapel, and standing before the backlit statue of the Virgin Mary creates a solemn, noble, and sacred atmosphere.)

(Catholic devotional prayer candles.)

(Having lunch at the cafeteria inside the church—sandwich, borscht, pastries. Simple and pure, reflecting Catholic customs.)

(The view of Montreal outside the window; the light mist adds a touch of beauty to the cityscape.)

(The main basilica of St. Joseph, a massive Roman Catholic domed building topped with a cross.)

(Stairs leading to the main basilica.)

"SAINT JOSEPH DU MONT ROYAL"

(The main entrance of the Roman pillar structure, with "SAINT JOSEPH DU MONT ROYAL" clearly inscribed directly above.)

(Murals along the stairwell telling stories of miracles.)

(The chapel sanctuary inside the main basilica.)

André Bessette

在天主教裡, 一般互相稱為sister(姐妹)跟brother(兄弟), 所以一般都稱呼為Brother Andre,

(The stone statue of André Bessette and St. Joseph's Oratory. In Catholicism, members usually address each other as sister and brother, so he is commonly known as Brother André. Born in 1845 and passing away in 1937 at the age of 91, he was dedicated to Catholic missionary work and remains a vital figure in the faith. The oratory he originally founded has grown to become one of Montreal's most iconic landmarks.)
